Due to FCM resistance to the commonly used organophosphates and some other insecticides normally used to control FCM, the CRI embarked upon a research project in 2002 to develop SIT for application to FCM control. This project was directed by Hendrik Hofmeyr (CRI), with funding from both the Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa (CGA) and the SA-EU Pesticide Initiative Program (PIP) and was operated in association with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (enthusiastically supported by dr. Brian Barnes of the Agricultural Research Council) and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Services (USDA – ARS).

This research led to a commercial trial in 2005 where excellent results were obtained by Hendrik Hofmeyr and his team. In summary, he achieved good suppression of the FCM population and reduced FCM related fruit damage by 95%. Naturally, the results were welcomed by the industry and it was decided to commercialise this technique, hence XSIT.

The decision was made to build the facility in Citrusdal, where the field research had been conducted and being the production region that provides the majority of the citrus fruit that is exported to the USA. The idea was that this would be a first phase of development, with the option of additional facilities within other major citrus producing areas, once the project is well under way and has proved to be economically viable and sustainable.

The shareholding in this company is held by River-Bioscience (50%), the citrus industry’s own in-house technology commercialisation company (a subsidiary of the CGA) and Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) (50%), a government funded initiative with the exclusive aim of commercialising South African bio-technology.
